I really wanted to celebrate this particular moment in early August - when the seas are a little more wild and the colours a little more muted. An Australian beach in summer is almost a cliche of hot sand and clear navy water but I prefer the ocean in winter. It feels more alive somehow, the wind is stronger, the waves more violent.
For me, winter in Sydney means clear, watery sunshine, the scent of wattle, camellias staining the footpath, and magnolias exploding over front fences. Our winters don’t last long and as soon as the magnolias start to bud it’s pretty much over. That’s why I wanted to capture this brief moment - when the air is still fresh and it’s still a little too cool to get in the water.
